Owners of certain vehicles are required to pay tax on the use of highways. The Form 2290 is called "Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax Return". In general, tax is paid on vehicles with a taxable gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more which are used for business and used on highways. The tax is a flat fee based on vehicle weight, for example $100 for 55,000 pounds vehicle, $122 for 55,001-56,000 pounds vehicle.
