Title: Australian Permanent Resident with South African passport
Post by: annie on December 12, 2010, 01:45:06 am
Hi, I'm currently living in Australia on a permanent resident visa. I have a South African passport. Do I need a Shengen Visa to travel to Italy & France?
One of the websites i searched, i found that "residents of australia" do not need Shengen visas. Does this mean i dont need one? Or because of my passport i do still need one?

Thanks.

It looks like you need Schengen visa. See here Who needs Schengen visa (http://www.euro-dollar-currency.com/who_needs_schengen_visa.htm). The requirement to have Schengen visa when visiting the Schengen zone depends on a persons nationality or citizenship, not on your residency. The permanent residency status means very little when it comes to entering a 3rd country. If you were to receive Australian Citizenship, then you would be able to travel to the Schengen zone (http://www.euro-dollar-currency.com/schengen_zone_members.htm) visa free. At this point it goes by your South African citizenship.
