Title: Will 802.11n router work with my existing 802.11b/g network?
Post by: atari on October 30, 2008, 08:38:24 pm
I have a laptop and PC connected to a Linsys 802.11b/g router. I want to replace it with a 802.11n router. Will my network cards work, or will I need to upgrade them too?

Most of the time, routers are backward compatible. You can install 802.11n router and have 802.11b/g devices connected to it. The router should recognize it and run as 802.11b, but check the documentation that comes with the router.

Note, running your router in mixed mode takes away some performance. If you are getting 802.11n router, it is best to upgrade everything. Having the devices to run in mixed mode requires some network and system overhead.

Yes, it will work, I have it set up the same way. No problem.
