"Resetting" Schengen Visa for U.S. Citizens

If I go to Schengen area for 90 days, then go outside Schengen area for 90 days (UK or Ireland), can I go back into the Schengen area for another 90 days having satisfied the 90/180 rule?

I'd like to spend as much time in the Schengen area as I can before coming back home to U.S.

I am a United States citizen.
